Introduction
Bridging the Gaps is an EPSRC-funded Virtual Interface Centre that involves the whole faculty of Engineering and the Department of Mathematics in the Science Faculty. The award has been made to establish an internal environment that nurtures interdisciplinary working, with the aim of developing new collaborative research programmes at the interface between mathematical sciences, information and computing technology, and engineering.
Under the grant, a small team comprising Alan Champneys (Engineering Mathematics), Raphael Clifford (Computer Science), Yves Tourigny (Mathematics) and Chris Allen (Aerospace Engineering) supported by project management from Research & Enterprise Development (RED) will solicit proposals from Bristol investigators for seminar programmes, away days, workshops, retreats or any imaginative event aimed at bridging the gaps. Involvement of researchers from outside the University is a key part of the programme.
Themes
Four broad themes have been identified; Uncertain Systems, Pure Mathematics and Algorithms, Media and Materials and Computational Science. The management team will be happy to consider any proposal that is not strictly within one of these four themes or overlaps more that one, provided it bridges a gap between at least two of the disciplines of mathematics, computer science and engineering.
More detail about the themes.
